Our aim is to support the visual arts in and around Saltaire, celebrating the village’s rich heritage, and offering opportunities to both emerging and established artists. We want to demonstrate the value of creativity through education and to engage the diverse communities within Bradford, making the visual arts accessible to all.Saltaire Arts Trailhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10050245596727181039noreply@blogger.comBlogger103125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-115689671258835253.post-70150961342764805372013-09-27T12:00:00.000+01:002013-09-27T17:06:01.904+01:00Creating The FutureImportant news about Saltaire Arts Trail
Following on from a busy and successful programme of events in 2013, which will conclude in December with the Living Advent Calendar, Saltaire Inspired (the charity that organises Saltaire Arts Trail) will be undertaking an intensive period of strategic development in order to revitalise, coordinate and strengthen all of its events and to guarantee their future success.

During the spring and summer of 2014 we will be working with partners and funders on the design and planning of our events programme. The re-developed programme will be launched in May 2015 with a bigger, more exciting Saltaire Arts Trail than ever before, followed by similarly strengthened autumn and winter events.

Getting ready for our re-launch will take a great deal of hard work and planning, and so there will be no Saltaire Arts Trail in 2014. However, the Makers’ Fair Festival Special and Living Advent Calendar 2014 will go ahead as usual.

We hope to involve all of our stakeholders in the planning of the redesigned events programme. We see this as an exciting process; a chance to stand back and re-imagine, to create something of truly outstanding interest and quality, and we hope you’ll join us!

Next steps
We will keep in touch about how the plans are developing through Twitter, Facebook and our website. In the meantime if you have any questions please don't hesitate to get in touch, if there's something you want to know, email hello@saltaireartstrail.co.uk
Tell us about what you do and what type of materials you use.
Our work at Stencil Haus Designs is based on a mutual love of both fabrics and stencil artwork. The reductionist approach involved in producing stencil images creates a highly graphical outcome which we transfer onto fabric items for the home. We use screen printing and block printing (in lino and wood) to create the images.

We are now also using machine printed fabric which has enabled us to expand our design ideas into more complex territory, as well as produce work that is not related to stencils, such as our Timid Fox Cushion.

Where do you produce your work?
Our cushions are handmade at home! Our dream is a proper studio to spread out in…

Is your art your main job and how did you get started?
Art is currently my main job. It started by accident, after upcycling an old chair whilst unemployed. I spent months hand cutting and then painting stencils onto the chair and an obsession was born.

What work will you be exhibiting?
The bulk of our work is currently cushions, but there may also be an appearance from the silk scarves that we have started making!

Where else can we see and buy your work?
Stencil Haus Designs products are available to buy on Etsy (www.etsy.com/uk/shop/stencilhaus) and WowThankYou (www.wowthankyou.co.uk/stencil-haus-designs) The company website is www.stencilhaus.co.uk

What made you wants to exhibit at Saltaire?
The Saltaire Festival is a community event, encouraging everyone to get involved, and the Makers Fair is no different. The mutual love of creativity and craft generates a wonderful atmosphere. It’s a place where you know people will appreciate your work and the fact that it is original and handmade.
Tell us about the work you do and the types of materials you use.
Bonker*s Clutterbucks are a husband (Peter) and wife (Kate) team working in a diverse range of materials to produce dioramas, 3D models and card modelling kits. We enjoy up-cycling found objects, vintage paper and maps. We are passionate about whimsical modes of transport, travelling fairs and circuses and
hot air balloons.

Where do you produce your work? Does your working environment form part of the
inspiration for your art?
We work from our studio at home in an old Corn Warehouse in the Rossendale Valley, Lancashire. Our home is an extension of what we do and is adorned in found objects of interest, that we have collected along the way.

Is your art your main job? How did you get started?
We are both from artistic backgrounds. Peter studied Fine Art Painting at Chelsea and Winchester School of Art while Kate studied Textile design and weaving at
Huddersfield and Winchester. We formed Bonker*s Clutterbucks in 2011as a result of job loss and redundancy. We were inspired to make card modelling kits and dioramas through our love of storytelling, the wonderful work of artists such as Su Blackwell and Edward Gorey and our children's imaginary friends. Our goal is to create and source a diverse range of products and never pigeon hole ourselves.

What work will you be exhibiting at the Saltaire Festival Makers’ Fair Special?
We plan to exhibit diorama boxes and up cycled pieces, models and cards at the Saltaire Festival Maker's Fair Special.

Do you work in any other mediums besides the work you will be exhibiting at the
Makers’ Fair Special?
We enjoy dabbling in a variety of mediums, paint, textiles, cut paper, cardboard, found objects, photography, collage and papier-mâché. We would love to explore film, projection and animation.

Where else can we see and buy your work?
We have exhibited at the Platform Gallery- Clitheroe, the Heart Gallery - Hebden Bridge, Holmfirth Artweek, Super Duper Fair, Tourist Information Centre and Grundy Gallery - Blackpool and at Jennifer Collier's gallery, unit twelve - Stafford. Our work has been available online via ukhandmade.co.uk, our blog http://bonkersclutterbucks.com and we have monthly stalls at Treacle Market, Macclesfield.

Tell us about your most exciting or memorable commission?
I think the most bonkers thing we have worked on would possibly have to be the time we spent making balloon modelling kits to product test. It wasn't economically viable to have a small batch die cut so we printed, reinforced, flattened, hand cut and packaged 1,600 components to create 50 kits which we handed out to friends and strangers to test. It was a labour of love and we had numb index fingers from
repetitive scalpel cutting, for months to come! Yup it was definitely bonkers but an essential step.

What was it about the Saltaire Festival Makers’ Fair Special that made you want to
apply to exhibit?
We love Saltaire village, it's ambience and have visited the Maker's Fair two years running. We are elated to be chosen to take part because there is such a high standard of unusual, well designed work.

Have you participated or visited the Saltaire Festival Makers’ Fair Special before?
We haven't exhibited at the Maker's Fair before but took part in the Arts Trail and were awarded Best of Open Houses 2013, which we were delighted about.

What is unique about it and how does it differ from other events?
Saltaire Festival Maker's Fair is certainly unique, it's a creative hub which attracts art, design and craft lovers from far and wide. There is nowhere else quite like Saltaire village and for it to also play host to such a concentrated gathering of dynamic makers makes it very special indeed. Discovering the maker's fair was rather like stumbling upon a bricks and mortar etsy.

Could you leave us with one more interesting fact about yourself or your work?
The name well…. this came to Peter while walking the dog on the tops. Peter is bonker*s and Kate's a descendant of the Clutterbucks.
Tell us about the work you do and the types of materials you use.
I work with sheets of art glass, recycled glass, and glass powders. I combine these using a variety of techniques and fuse together at temperatures around 800C in my kiln. My finished pieces have often been worked on and fired in the kiln several times before being finished by hand polishing.

Where do you produce your work? Does your working environment form part of the inspiration for your art?
We have converted our garage in to a studio for me with the help of an ebay kitchen. All my work is produced at home. I take my inspiration from many things including being lucky enough to live in the Pennines. Some of my work is inspired by the landscapes around me.

Is your art your main job? How did you get started?
No. I started four years ago when I received a glass gift from a friend and wanted to learn how to make it. I signed up for a Saturday school and bought the equipment I needed to start a week later. I’ve always been creative but never found the right medium. I’m passionate about glass, the combination of light, colour and technique keeps me endlessly creative. Since my first course I have attended many more including two master classes with internationally reknown artists Miriam Di Fiore and Bob Leatherbarrow. I reduced my ‘day job’ to four days to give me a day a week to work with glass. I also find I spend much of my weekends and evenings doing the same.

What work will you be exhibiting at the Saltaire Festival Makers’ Fair Special?
Glass wall hangings, sculptural pieces and functional items. In particular my gorgeous glass rainbow (my biggest seller) Pennine houses, coasters celebrating the Tour de France coming to Yorkshire (pictures of cyclists in local scenery)’ and ‘crackle’ dishes and coasters.

Where else can we see and buy your work?
Spirals in Hebden Bridge, Mill on the Bridge in Skipton, Hebden Bridge and Halifax Tourist info, GinaB glass in Halifax, My online Folksy shop

Tell us about your most exciting or memorable commission?
Eight awards for the Big Life Company in Manchester each detailing one of their values e.g. Creative, Inspiring etc

What was it about the Saltaire Festival Makers’ Fair Special that made you want to apply to exhibit?
Having spent many years living in Bradford (Heaton) I have a lot of fondness for Saltaire and have been a regular visitor to the Makers Fair and Art Festival. They have always been great days out for me and I have always been very impressed by the quality of items on sale. I am delighted to be part of this event this year although a also a little sad not to be enjoying it as a punter.

Could you leave us with one more interesting fact about yourself or your work?
I am a keen cyclist having done both Land’s End to John O’Groats and Geneva to Nice over the highest road in Europe. I am very excited about the Tour de France coming to Yorkshire and this is influencing my current work. I am also a bit of a geek and this too can be seen in some of my work.
I design and make a small range of personal accessories and home ware using fine linens and cottons and use free hand embroidery to add life to my designs.

Where do you produce your work? Does your working environment form part of the inspiration for your art?
I have a garden workshop that overlooks the Yorkshire Dales countryside. My surrounding keep me inspired every day.

Is your art your main job? How did you get started?
Dear Emma Designs has been my main job for 3 years. I began when my children were babies and hatched a plan to start a business that allowed me to do the two things I love the most, being a mum and being creative.

What work will you be exhibiting at the Saltaire Festival Makers’ Fair Special?
I aim to have a full range of my work from small fabric pots with wren and robins to larger 2D art work featuring street scenes.

Where else can we see and buy your work?
I have a small number of retail outlets such as the Butterfly Rooms in Saltaire, Craft Centre and Design Gallery in Leeds and a more further a field. More details on my website.
I have made a range of tea cosies for a famous TV presenter. That was quite exciting!
What was it about the Saltaire Festival Makers’ Fair Special that made you want to apply to exhibit?

I love the feel of the Makers Fair, the quality of work available and the makers who exhibit are extremely talented.

What is unique about it and how does it differ from other events?
I love the fact that Saltaire is such a hub of creativity in itself and is such an historical town with so much going on. There are few venues like Saltaire that offer so much creativity to its visitors.

I work with glass; surface decorating and printing with various materials then kiln-firing. I am currently very much inspired by the Victorian period and have developed techniques that leave the glass with an aged, almost dusty appearance, as if the pieces are treasures found in an old attic or bottom drawer.

I'm a jeweller and printmaker. My jewellery is mostly silver and copper, with some brass elements. I enjoy using various techniques to make pattern, texture & colour, including etching, engraving and patination. My printmaking also influences the jewellery and vice-versa. In both disciplines I'm inspired by the English landscape and the patterns of fields, houses and boundaries with a bit of flora and fauna thrown in along the way!
It's a converted garage and looks out onto my lovely leafy garden so I'm very lucky, but I would say my inspiration comes mainly from the larger landscapes of North Yorkshire which are right on my doorstep. I'm also influenced by objects around me – 1950s textiles and ceramics which I collect in a very minor way, as well as lots of reproductions and books of work by British printmakers such as Ben Nicolson, Samuel Palmer and Robert Taverner.

Is your art your main job? How did you get started?
I'm a bit of a Jill of all trades - I'm also a Mum, trained in garden design and do a bit of English teaching too, but most of my time is spent creating things. I started with jewellery evening classes nearly 20 years ago, then developed an interest in printmaking. I've been mostly self-taught with some short courses and workshops and help and advice from a very good printmaker friend. When my youngest started school a couple of years ago I decided to develop more of a serious business and have received a lot of support from other makers at fairs and online.

What work will you be exhibiting at the Saltaire Festival Makers’ Fair Special?
Jewellery and prints, along with a new range of metal pictures using jewellery materials and techniques.

Do you work in any other mediums besides the work you will be exhibiting at the Makers’ Fair Special?
I love drawing with biro, pen & ink and sticks!

Where else can we see and buy your work?
I have work in The Cooper Gallery in Barnsley, Itch Gallery in Rutland, and participate in various shop and gallery pop-ups, including The Stalls in Leeds and Harlow Carr in Harrogate. I also have a website www.inkylinky.co.uk but as my work is quite varied and a lot are one-offs, it's quite difficult to keep up to date.

Tell us about your most exciting or memorable commission?
I was recently asked to make a pair of Sterling wedding rings, one of which was etched with a landscape scene. It was at the same time a huge honour and a massive responsibility but it was so rewarding to have done it.

What was it about the Saltaire Festival Makers’ Fair Special that made you want to apply to exhibit?
Saltaire is such a fabulous place filled with a sense of the history of working people. The Fair attracts people who are really interested in unusual handmade work – you only have to look at the clothes, jewellery and accessories of the visitors to see that! I often end up asking people where they bought their handbag/skirt/earrings. Other makers are so friendly too. The only problem is keeping hold of my profits and not spending it all on the gorgeous things for sale.

Could you leave us with one more interesting fact about yourself or your work?
My second cousin was once given a fridge by Donald Pleasence. I've led quite a sheltered life.
Tell us about the work you do and the types of materials you use.

I'm a digital illustrator who works in Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator. I enjoy creating vibrant and colourful prints filled with characters. I always begin with a pencil sketch to work out the composition and then use computer software and a graphics tablet to add colour and depth to my work whilst retaining a hand drawn style.

Where do you produce your work? Does your working environment form part of the inspiration for your art?

I work mainly on my computer at home in a little room filled with postcards and pictures of other people's work. I carry a sketchbook with me everywhere and enjoy getting out in the Yorkshire wilds to clear my head and think of new ideas.

Is your art your main job? How did you get started?
Yes, I'm an illustrator and web designer for Curve Agency in Leeds and produce illustrations and animations for numerous clients and agencies. Drawing is something I've always done and I'm lucky I get to do something I love in my day job.

What work will you be exhibiting at the Saltaire Festival Makers’ Fair Special?
New limited edition giclee prints and cards of illustrated maps, children's art and vibrant landscapes filled with colourful characters.

Do you work in any other mediums besides the work you will be exhibiting at the Makers’ Fair Special?
I do a lot of sketching and the odd bit of painting and ink work.

Where else can we see and buy your work?
I try to keep my website updated with all my latest work (www.tomwoolley.com) and I sell limited edition prints in the my online shop tomwoolley.bigcartel.com

Tell us about your most exciting or memorable commission?
The feeling of being awarded a new commission is very exciting. I'm working on some animated films, comics and interactive web stuff at the moment which is a lot of fun and I've just completed the illustrations for an iPad story book app – really excited to see that when it's released.

What was it about the Saltaire Festival Makers’ Fair Special that made you want to apply to exhibit?
I enjoy visiting the Festival every year and exhibited some illustraton as part of the Arts Trail in 2011. It was great to meet so many other artists and see people's reaction to my work and fancied having another go.

Have you participated or visited the Saltaire Festival Makers’ Fair Special before?
Please see above.

What is unique about it and how does it differ from other events?
Saltaire is lovely!

Could you leave us with one more interesting fact about yourself or your work?
I spent two years in Moscow competing in the underground Russian wrestling league. They called me 'The Red Lobster'.
Tell us about the work you do and the types of materials you use.
I make handstitched leathergoods from British hand dyed vegetable tanned leather and stitched using waxed linen thread spun in Chester. The bags are finished with brass buckles which are cast in Walsall at the last remaining buckle foundry in the UK. I am also currently designing a range of bags which takes things back to the basics, using undyed leather, natural linen thread, hand plyed and waxed by myself and hand forged buckles and also exploring the ideas of including had woven textiles. Watch this space!

Where do you produce your work? Does your working environment form part of the inspiration for your art?
I live in Ilkley and have a small workshop at home. I can look out over the valley on one side and towards the moors on the other so it's a very inspirational place to be and one which has been the foundation of my creative endeavors to date. The Wharfe and Aire valleys have a huge amount of history in them, both in the countryside and the towns, you can't help but to be enriched with ideas for new projects!

Is your art your main job? How did you get started?
As well as working in leather, I also work at Salts Mill at Kath Libbert Jewellery Gallery where I have worked since coming out of college. It's a pleasure to be able to represent talented jewellers and silversmiths from all around the UK and to show their work in such an iconic building of this area, I'm very lucky. Working part time has given me the chance to explore other crafts all around the country and this is how I found leatherwork. I've trained with a saddler of the old school in Penrith, David May, who is an inspiration not just in his work but in his approach to life. Being a maker is not just about making, it's about all the fantastic people who you meet along the way too!

What work will you be exhibiting at the Saltaire Festival Makers’ Fair Special?
I'll be showing a range of satchels, bags, journals and accessories all made with the artist, craftperson and explorer in mind.

Do you work in any other mediums besides the work you will be exhibiting at the Makers’ Fair Special?
Anyone who knows me would laugh at this question! I have a certified addiction to making things so at the weekend you will find me making clothes, weaving baskets and hurdles for the garden, dyeing wool and fabric with plant dyes, laying a patio and making the odd chair! I love to work with raw, natural materials with few tools.

Where else can we see and buy your work?
I have been taking private commissions up to date while I have been finalising a collection. At the moment I am putting the final touches to my online shop, ready to launch my work in time for the fair and to approach stockists. So my work is exclusive to the fair, it's quite exciting really!

Tell us about your most exciting or memorable commission?
Last year I was helping out on a self-build project in a middle of a wood in the middle of Herefordshire. I set up a little woodland workshop in the outdoor kitchen and made a set of sheaths for the owner's woodworking tools. It was such a beautiful setting and great to be able to set up and make so remotely with just my knife, needles, thread and awl.

What was it about the Saltaire Festival Makers’ Fair Special that made you want to apply to exhibit?
All sorts of reasons! The quality of the fair has always been really high so to be able to show alongside makers of such caliber is a real pleasure. Also, it's great that there is a platform for talented makers to show their work in this area, I think it puts Saltaire on the map as a centre for local craft and design and a forward thinking attitude which it continues to be famous for since the days of Sir Titus Salt.

What is unique about it and how does it differ from other events?
I think there is always a buzz about this fair with it being part of the festival, everyone always has a great time and it will be fun to see it from different perspective.

Could you leave us with one more interesting fact about yourself or your work?
Many people can't believe that when I mean handstitched, it really is stitched by hand. I don't use any machinery at all, just an awl, two needles and linen thread. That, coupled with playing the fiddle very badly mean I can't really feel my fingertips anymore!!
I make silver jewellery & small sculptures. The jewellery has a main theme of birds & animals & I developed this into slightly larger pieces in copper & brass with wooden mounts.

Where do you produce your work? Does your working environment form part of the inspiration for your art?
My studio is attached to my house & yes I look out into the garden & watch my hens & other garden birds, so it does help feed my work.

Is your art your main job? How did you get started?
I would say it is my main passion but it can be isolating if that is all you do. So I do part time work too which keeps me in touch with other people & also uses my creative abilities.

Jewellery & small sculptures.

Do you work in any other mediums besides the work you will be exhibiting at the Makers’ Fair Special?
I used to be a printmaker, I also made artist’s books. I suppose I use a lot of these skills with my 3d work now.

Where else can we see and buy your work?
I stock various shops around the country, currently my jewellery is in The Leeds Craft & Design Shop. I’m exhibiting at The Great Northern craft Fair in Manchester in October 2013.

Tell us about your most exciting or memorable commission?
I made a silver pendant for The British Museum in 2011. It was a version of Alan Measles, Grayson Perry’s teddy bear. He curated an exhibition - The Tomb of the Unknown Craftsman. My pendant went on sale in the BM shop.

What was it about the Saltaire Festival Makers’ Fair Special that made you want to apply to exhibit?

Tell us about the work you do and the types of materials you use.

I create limited edition silk screen prints from my drawings of local places of interest.

Where do you produce your work? Does your working environment form part of the inspiration for your art?

I’m lucky enough to have a studio not too far away from Saltaire which I use for the drawing, preparing paper for prints and mounting work. For printing I go to Inc Workshop in Leeds.

My studio doesn't really act as inspiration, I take this from my day to day life and things I have seen and heard about, I then get to go on day trips with my camera.

Is your art your main job?

At the moment I am a full time artist after recently receiving financial support through the New Enterprise Allowance after a period of unemployment. This has allowed me to get started and support myself while I concentrate on my work.

How did you get started?

In 2011 I took an evening class at Leeds College of Art and design to learn about printmaking techniques. After becoming unemployed I gave prints to my family for Christmas presents and was encouraged by my brother to look at selling my work, but it was a while after this that I even considered that this was something I could do.

What work will you be exhibiting at the Saltaire Arts Trail?

I will be producing a few new pieces especially for Saltaire Arts Trail, but expect a mixture of local images with subjects ranging from natural beauty spots, ruins and mills.

Do you work in any other mediums besides the work you will be exhibiting at the Arts Trail?

Not currently, but I would like to produce some lino and etching work in the future.

Where else can we see and buy your work?

My work can currently be bought at Art Parade in Saltaire, Hand Made in Bradford, Studio Seven in Otley, The Weaverbird Workshop in Ilkley, The Juju Shop in Leeds, The Craft Centre and Design Gallery in Leeds, Chirpy in Chapel Allerton and also I have Shipley Glen Tramway work at their shop close to Saltaire.

Tell us about your most exciting or memorable commission?

It’s early days for me so I have only had one commission which was to do a set of two drawings of someone’s sports cars. I’d never drawn a car before so it was an experience but I am happy with the results and it’s nice that even with a different subject type they still reflect my style of drawing. I’ve been testing my male friends to see if they can guess the cars, luckily with a good success rate so they can’t be that bad!

What was it about the Saltaire Arts Trail that made you want to apply to exhibit?

Living near to Saltaire it’s an event I always look forward to, it really is a unique location to have such an event. Even from a fairly young age I’ve wanted to support young artists and makers but never dreamt I’d be participating one day.

Have you participated or visited the Saltaire Arts Trail before?

Visited lots of times but this will be the first one I will have exhibited my work at, which is all very exciting! I will definitely be having a look round too.

What is unique about it and how does it differ from other events?

The standard of work has is always really high and a vast array of mediums and styles are on display. It’s accessibility and relaxed nature allows the public, who may be daunted by going into a gallery environment, to experience and purchase artwork in a different way, and it’s a wonderful day out.

Could you leave us with one more interesting fact about yourself or your work?

I originally studied Fashion Design at university but found the industry just wasn’t for me, then I found myself working in marketing and printmaking was just something I’d wanted to try. Strange how things work out.jbhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09912668408426681076noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-115689671258835253.post-53504101370121229802013-05-08T13:12:00.000+01:002013-05-08T13:12:26.059+01:00Q & A with Jane Bevan, first time Makers' Fair exhibitor

Tell us about the work you do and the types of materials you use.

I make vessels and small sculptures using found, natural materials which I collect in local woodlands each day. For example birch bark from fallen trees, twigs, thorns, seeds and feathers. I look for the humble, overlooked materials which would otherwise be trodden on or thrown away. I then stitch, bind, tie and twine the materials together to make my work which is painstaking and slow but very satisfying to make!

Where do you produce your work? Does your working environment form part of the inspiration for your art?

I work from my home in rural South Derbyshire and walk every day in the area searching for materials. When possible I also beachcomb and forage in other countryside areas for new ideas including the Yorkshire Dales where I am a frequent visitor.

Is your art your main job?

Yes although this year will also see the publication of my art book instructing users on making art with found, natural materials published by Bloomsbury. Previously I worked in museums and galleries as a curator ( including many years at Cartwright Hall in Bradford)

How did you get started?

After a 25 year career in the arts as a curator and event organiser I went back to Derby University as a mature student to fulfil my dream of being an artist. It was a perfect time to undertake the studies after seeing so much artwork over the years made by others. I am a passionate visitor of museums and galleries including the Yorkshire Museums, Yorkshire Sculpture Park and the Hepworth. I gain a great deal of inspiration from collections such as Pitt Rivers in Oxford and the British Museum where natural materials have been used in innovative and exciting ways.

What work will you be exhibiting at the Saltaire Arts Trail?

Pots and vessels made of bark, feathers, twigs and horse chestnut leaf stems! These range in size from 10 cms to 30 cms high. All are stitched by hand. Framed collaged work Some pebble/ beach debris jewellery

Do you work in any other mediums besides the work you will be exhibiting at the Arts Trail?

I am exploring making temporary artwork in the woodlands which I will be photographing

Where else can we see and buy your work?

My work can be seen on the Seek and Adore and Craftfinder website. I have showcase exhibitions currently in Lincolnshire( South Holland Arts Centre) and at the Djanogly Gallery in Nottingham. My work is stocked by Derby Art Gallery and Museum and the Dansel Wood Gallery in Abbotsbury, Dorset. I will be exhibiting at Lustre Craft Fair in Nottingham in November this year for the 3 rd time and also at the Melbourne Festival which I also help to organise. I have a showcase exhibition at the 20 21 Gallery in Scunthorpe in September called ‘Walking with Nature’.

Tell us about your most exciting or memorable commission?

From my degree show the University of Derby bought my work as a Purchase Prize and the Few and Far Gallery in London purchased work.

What was it about the Saltaire Arts Trail that made you want to apply to exhibit?

Having lived in Bradford for many years I have long been a supporter of the arts in the area and have a great nostalgia and love of Saltaire, in particular since seeing Opera North perform in the mill in the 1980s!

Have you participated or visited the Saltaire Arts Trail before?

Visited last year

What is unique about it and how does it differ from other events?

The friendly, intimate and warm atmosphere, the Yorkshire hospitality, the houses and architecture.

Could you leave us with one more interesting fact about yourself or your work?

I have recently overcome any squeamishness after a taxidermy course. I also like to pluck the feathers which I use from road kill or a friends bird stock.

Tell us about the work you do and the types of materials you use.
My work tends to fall into three categories, landscapes, seascapes and urbanscapes and although I tend to work on different scales it’s mainly my large pieces that people are familiar with. I work in oils, building layer upon layer, to afford an almost textural quality to the finished piece. I enjoy experimenting with techniques such as impasto, the use of palette knives and the application of glazes.

Where do you produce your work? Does your working environment form part of the inspiration for your art?
I’m lucky enough to have space at home to use as a studio but it is in the basement so I wouldn’t really say it was all that inspirational but it is practical and not too far away from the fridge, kettle or biscuit tin.

One year I needed to paint a canvas which was too big to get down into the basement so I hijacked our spare bedroom for the summer. Never again… spent far too much time gazing out of the window watching the birds, sunshine, the cat… anything but getting on with painting.

Is your art your main job?
Not yet, but it is my main aspiration.

How did you get started?
Some paints, a canvas and a beautiful photograph taken by my partner…

What work will you be exhibiting at the Saltaire Arts Trail?
I will be launching a whole new collection of work just for the arts trail and unlike previous years where we’ve hosted up to 9 artists in our house, this year I will be able to concentrate on exhibiting a substantial body of my own work.

Do you work in any other mediums besides the work you will be exhibiting at the Arts Trail?
Rarely - occasionally some pen & ink sketches.

Where else can we see and buy your work?
Maiden Bridge Art Centre, near Lancaster; The Old Grammar School, Otley; Biscuit Factory, Newcastle; also the Butterfly Rooms, Saltaire stock my prints and greetings cards.

Tell us about your most exciting or memorable commission?
When I first started painting in oils about 8 years ago I was invited to have a solo exhibition at the Yorkshire Dales National Park Headquarters in Bainbridge. The work I was asked to produce for this exhibition included large landscapes of the Yorkshire Dales with a central piece being a triptych of Malham Cove. This triptych was shown in the first year of the Saltaire Arts Trail and will be returning 6 Harold Place this year as this will be the last year we open up our house for the foreseeable future.

What was it about the Saltaire Arts Trail that made you want to apply to exhibit?
We are part of the furniture... our house, 6 Harold Place, has been an open house ever since the arts trail started seven years ago.

Have you participated or visited the Saltaire Arts Trail before?
Every time; we’ve been here longer than anyone, except Titus of course.

What is unique about it and how does it differ from other events?
The open houses are quite a unique part of Saltaire Arts Trail and as an artist and home owner it provides me with a great opportunity to talk to people about my work as well as to be able to promote the wonderful village which is Saltaire. It has also given me the opportunity to curate several exhibitions; to turn our house into an art gallery, changing a domestic space into a public space, even if only for a weekend.

Could you leave us with one more interesting fact about yourself or your work?
One of my earliest exhibitions was the “Vamos exhibition” at the Biscuit Factory in Newcastle. This was a celebration of art inspired by Latin America and featured several artists originally from that continent. I was able to draw upon our trip to Cuba a few months prior to the exhibition to produce 6 pieces that were so well received at “Vamos” that I was asked to give a talk on them on the opening night.

Paula Dunn will be exhibiting at 6 Harold Place

Tell us about the work you do and the types of materials you use.
I create, mainly, Stitched Collages based on the things I collect on the walks I go on. I am obsessed with seed pods and ‘weeds’ and represent them through collaged paper and fabric that I then draw into with a sewing machine. All the things in my work relate to journeys, from the things I collect, materials I up cycle to the maps of the places I have been.

Where do you produce your work? Does your working environment form part of the inspiration for your art?
I produce my work in my studio at home. Here I have all the things I have collected, images that inspire me and it is the place I love to be.

Is your art your main job?
Yes but creating my own work isn’t my primary ‘job’. I am the Head of Art at Brighouse High School. I love teaching Art and sharing my passion with others.

How did you get started?
I have been teaching for 17 years now and over time developed an interest in textiles. After completing a distance learning City and Guilds level 3 I was not sure what to do next. It was 2 years ago that I decided to focus some of my time creating my own work. Initially I intended just to spend an evening a week playing in my studio, but after being talked into entering the Calderdale open exhibition in 2011, winning a prize and selling some work, I began to spend more time on my own work and slowly developing my stitched collages. I exhibited at Art in the Pen last year and since then I have been continuing my love of teaching through teaching my own workshops, giving talks and demonstrations at various groups and exhibiting at a number of galleries both in the north and the south.

What work will you be exhibiting at the Saltaire Arts Trail?
There will be a range of my stitched collages, handmade and printed cards and felt pods

Do you work in any other mediums besides the work you will be exhibiting at the Arts Trail?
I also have a love of photography especially when recording inspirational items.

Where else can we see and buy your work?

I have a Folksy shop (H-anne-made) and current work on sale at NeST in Barnard Castle and at 2 galleries in Leigh-on Sea (till the end of the month)

Tell us about your most exciting or memorable commission?
My most exciting moment was selling my first large piece of work at Art in the Pen last year. The family that bought it had seen me at the Trawden show the week before and had wanted to see my other work. It was one of my first large collages that feature a number of seed heads, machine and hand embroidery.

What was it about the Saltaire Arts Trail that made you want to apply to exhibit?
I first heard about the Arts Trail through a link on facebook. After looking at the website and seeing the fantastic work that was on exhibition last year I thought I would love to be part of the next one, but thought I wouldn’t be selected. On hearing I have been selected was amazing especially after I read about the number of entries there had been. I am really looking forward to participating, but also seeing the trail for the first time.

What is unique about it and how does it differ from other events?
I don’t have a lot of things to compare it to that I have taken part in, just things I have visited. I love the mix of artists that will be there and the variety of places you will be able to see the work. Sometimes seeing work in galleries can make everything formal and you can feel from the work. Being able to meet the artists and make a personal connection with them is unique as is seeing the work. I am looking forward to my 2 children coming too as all the family activities sound fantastic and I love anything that engages young people with art and in the current climate makes being creative important.

Performance, Film and Print are just some of the challenging and inspiring exhibitions that will be part of The Saltaire Arts Trail. During this year’s event we will be showcasing unusual and interesting art at different venues throughout the village.

Textile artist Alice Fox presents “Gifts from the Pavement”, a collection of prints that record the textures, marks and shapes found on the streets of Saltaire. Set up in a pop up shop on Victoria Road, Alice’s work invites you to discover the unnoticed and discarded that is under our feet.

We also have two performance artists at this year’s event. Christopher Mollon will be at 13 Caroline Street on 25th May presenting: The Arc of Orange, interpreting specific geological block diagram and relating this to the objects he has found walking specific coastlines. The remaining objects and images recorded during the performance will be displayed for the remainder of The Saltaire Arts Trail. Also, on Saturday 25 May, Yvonne Carmichael presents “Chore-eography” at 44 Whitlam Street, Saltaire. Her performance invites you to take a fresh look at domesticity and women’s work through a series of domestic chores.

Entrance to all our exhibitions, performance and events are free because Saltaire Arts Trail is committed to supporting the visual arts and we believe that art should be available to all.

The Bank holiday weekend is a time for families to venture out in search of entertainment and activity. Saltaire Arts Trail is the ideal destination for families seeking something more creative and we have it by the bucket-load with art and craft workshops aimed at bringing fun for all.

This year Saltaire Arts Trail has a space–age theme to our family friendly activities including astronomy, space travel, aliens and time capsules. We work in partnership with local arts organisations to deliver quality activities such as felt making, den building and crafting. We are welcoming two new partners to our family activities – The West Yorkshire Print Workshop and The Print Project – both specialists in print making. They are offering families a chance to get busy with two exciting printing techniques, screen printing and letterpress.

We are also welcoming a real-life astronomer, not from outer space but from Keighley Astronomical Society, who will be teaching you to build rockets that are ready to launch for blast off. There’s more family fun with our “Alien Invasion” of Saltaire, so come and search the village for creatures from outer space.

As a contemporary glass etcher I
take vintage or iconic pieces of glassware and try and bring them to life with
the tools of typography, wit and my own slightly askew way of looking at the
world.

I’m based in Harrogate and work
out of two studios – one in which I design, the other in which I etch.
But the most important part of my work is done inside my head.
Whether it’s waiting for some traffic lights to turn green in Otley or visiting
a museum in Venice I can pretty much pinpoint the exact location for each and
every idea for a piece that I’ve come up with so far, and I believe that if you
look at the world from the right angle…close one eye a little and give it a
chance to…you can find inspiration in absolutely everything.

Well, technically I started doing
this when I was a full time stay at home dad, but being as my daughter starts
school for real in September I guess the answer’s yes – yes this is my main
job. Trite as it may sound though, it’s not a job - this is pretty much what I
do to keep myself entertained as much as anything else. If anything, it’s
therapy.

with quotes and a few one off special pieces.

I’ll also be doing a limited
edition of 10 small etched lab bottles of an exclusive new design* to celebrate
this years Saltaire Arts Trail.

an ongoing book project called ‘The Library Of Verisimilitude’ that will one
day get finished.

remember picking up a flyer for SAT and thinking – wow, this is the kind of
place that real, proper Makers and Artists display at, one day this is the kind

Last year’s Saltaire Arts Trail
was the very first event that I had ever done, I was very nervous and had no
idea what to expect. Since those three days in May 2012 (Many thanks to 6
Harold Place) things have not stopped going a little crazy for [vinegar &
brown paper]. It’s all been a bit weird to be honest.

Both the Open Houses and the
Makers Fair manage to attract simply the finest mix of Artists and Maker’s in
the North – everybody wants to be at Saltaire in May. The atmosphere literally
tingles with creativity.

I have a (very) short story in
the fastest selling book of short stories ever published in the UK. (I
believe the book’s success had less to do with me and more to do with the fact
that one of the other authors first initials were J.K. - though as with
everything - I could be wrong).

Our fantastic team of volunteers have been working hard on pulling together the final details for the Open Houses, Makers Fair and Family activities so a big thank you to them all. The details of all the chosen artists will be made live on the website in the next few days so watch this space….

We’ve also been working hard on raising funds for this years event through sponsorship and advertising. Our most recent initiative is ‘Adopt a House’ where you, or your business, can be featured as a supporter outside one of the Open Houses and we will also talk about you lots on our Social Media feeds. The fee is £100 a house, but we will accept part sponsorship as well so if you and your friends would like to sponsor a house between you get in touch! Any questions can be directed to coordinator@saltaireartstrail.co.uk.

Our family activities section will have lots going on as always but this year we are joined by a number of fantastic partner organisations who are working with us to promote various art forms, to make sure you and your family have a great day and also to tell you all about the great work they do as well. So it doesn’t matter if you’re 1 or 100 we will have something for you over the SAT weekend.

Don’t forget to put the dates in your diary – 25-27 May.

That’s all for now!
